Lady - Armchair designed by Marco Zanuso and manufactured by Arflex

Lady - Arflex

(1951)
armchair

The armchair Lady by Marco Zanuso is one of the symbols of the Italian design in 1950. It represents a form of innovation in furniture production because of its shape, production method, and materials.

The realisation of Lady by the manufacturer company Arflex represents an evolution of the Italian design and production methods, and announces "the arrival of modernity".

The armchair is made of separately lined foam and nastrocord fitted on a structure made of printed metal sheets (or, in the previous versions, of wood).

Lady has been awarded a gold medal at the IX Triennale of Milano in 1951 and obtained approval by both the critics and the public.

Technically the armchair Lady is the product of some studies made with the research office of the company producer of nastrocord and foam to research about the performance of the combinations of the two materials.

This new construction method is based on replacing the concept of an armchair made of a unique structure, on which upholstery is applied, with that of flat and manageable joint elements, that can be filled and lined before being assembled.

This procedure offers the possibility of realising a serial work based on the application of sequences of tasks specifically studied to produce elastic printed elements, and machine cut-and-sown removable linings.
