Harry Bertoia - Architect and designer

Harry Bertoia

(1915-1978)
architect - designer

Harry Bertoia is the designer who introduced the use of metal in industrial furniture design in a way that is distinctive when compared to the one which other designers, like Charles and Ray Eames, adopted. While they used it for internal invisible structures or as a support for parts that were made of wood or other materials, Bertoia chose it as the protagonist. His most noticeable furniture items, like the Diamond Chair, the Bird Chair and the Asymmetric Chaise, were made entirely of metal and were sold with a cushion that could be removed.

Unlike the pieces of furniture of many of his colleagues, his creations have resulted in being timeless designs that today the manufacturing house Knoll produces with no variations from the original concept.
