Audi
(1899)
car manufacturing company
The car brand now marketed as Audi was funded in 1899 with
the name Horch & Co. by a German business person called August
Horch. The company split and August Horch was no
longer allowed to brand his cars with his own surname.
To keep continuity with the original car brand name, in German
meaning 'listen' he chose the Latin word 'audi'.
Today Audi is the only car manufacturing company that produces
vehicles which are totally galvanised.
It produces cars in aluminium. An example is the Audi A8,
realised in 1997, which introduced the aluminium
space frame technology, a method for creating light weight structures
by interlocking bars with one another in a three-dimensional pattern.
In the period around 1995 Audi introduced a new series of vehicles
in compliance to its commitment to high performance.
The aluminium car concept was applied to many car models
among which is the Audi A2, produced in 2001.
