The Finnish designer Eero Aarnio studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts of Helsinki and in 1962 opened his own design office to experiment with interior and product design. In 1963 he designed the Ball Chair, a ball shaped chair made of fibreglass. Soon the chair was mass produced and fibreglass became his favourite material.

With Pastil Chair, a creation that won an American Industrial Design Award in 1968, and Tomato Chair, a challenging and innovative brightly coloured seat, he obtained international popularity.
