Alvar Aalto
Museum
(1966)
design museum
The Alvar Aalto Museum was founded in 1966 in a building designed by Alvar Aalto which was completed in 1973. It provides information about his work, organises exhibitions, and issues design and architecture publications. In the display area it features a permanent collection that illustrates some aspects of Alvar Aalto's work in architecture, lighting design, and industrial design.
Since 1994 the museum has been in charge of the Muuratsalo Experimental House, a beautiful and innovative building situated in a forest in the shore of the Finnish island of Muuratsalo which was a summer house that Alvar Aalto and his wife, architect and designer Elsa Kaisa Makiniemi, in art Elissa Aalto, had dedicated to experimentation with new ideas in architecture and design.
