2CV -
Citroen
(1954)
innovative and economical french car
The 2CV seems to be the most appreciated Citroen automobile.
Designed in 1936 and manufactured in large number in the period between 1954 and
1985, it was sold in more than three millions copies. It was presented for the first time to the public at an exhibition in the French city of Paris in 1948.
The 2CV Citroen is one of the most famous automobiles in the world. Many people say that it can either be loved or not understood, and nobody can deny that it had a huge impact on society internationally while giving the possibility of travelling to those who did not have enough money to buy a standard type of car.
Designed to be suitable for driving in the tumultuous roads of the countryside spaces of France without the need of a lot of maintenance, the Citroen 2CV initially became available to those who needed it most, and subsequently to the others. Because of its economical price, it would have been impossible to produce it in a number which was large enough to satisfy the needs of the whole market simultaneously.
During the creative process of the 2CV Citroen one objective was the creation of a car suitable for carrying extremely fragile objects while driven on a ploughed field without damaging them. The result was the creation of a car with excellent shock absorbers, economical and safe.
The first 2CV cars that where mass produced had a roof which could be rolled back from the windscreen like in the cabriolets.
